Kik is a free mobile app that allows users to send messages without giving out personal phone numbers. Created in 2009 by students from the University of Waterloo and developed by Kik Interactive, Inc., the app made its official launch in October 2010. It saw immediate success, garnering more than a million user registrations within its first two weeks.
Today, Kik has registered over 300 million users, with a notable 40% of its audience consisting of teenagers in the U.S. The app is available in English only and works on iOS devices with version 8.1 or higher and Android devices running version 4.1 or later.
Users begin by downloading Kik and registering with an email and password. A customizable username is chosen, which doesn’t need to include a real name and can feature emojis. There’s no need to link a phone number. Kik does track IP addresses to help determine user location.
Once registered, users can message friends, share media, and even send sketches or mobile web content. The app is entirely free and available to anyone 13 years or older. If a user decides to stop using Kik, account deletion instructions are easy to follow and contact info is available for help.
